The Researcher’s Guide to the Digital Inclusion Galaxy: Designing and Using Data from the NTIA Internet Use Survey

For over 25 years, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau to gather data on who uses the Internet, which devices, technologies, and applications they utilize, and what barriers still prevent too many Americans from taking full advantage of the information age. Numerous policymakers, researchers, and advocates rely on this data collection to inform digital inclusion and other Internet policy work. Despite the survey’s important contributions to Internet policy, most practitioners in this space have limited exposure to how the survey comes together and how to use the resulting data.

By assembling experts at NTIA and the Census Bureau, as well as external researchers who regularly use NTIA Internet Use Survey datasets, we will offer attendees a behind-the-scenes look at one of the largest in-depth surveys of individual computer and Internet use in the United States. Panelists will provide an overview of survey design, administration, and use of the data in research and policy analysis. We will also share best practices, answer questions, and guide attendees through how they might use the data in their own work.
